Pipe Diameter: The diameter of the pipe being bent has a significant impact on the achievable bending radius. Larger diameter pipes generally require larger bending radii to avoid excessive deformation, wrinkling, or cracking during the bending process. For example, a small-diameter copper pipe (e.g., 1/4 inch) might be able to be bent to a relatively small bending radius, such as 0.5 inches, using an appropriate die. In contrast, a large-diameter carbon steel pipe (e.g., 4 inches) would likely need a much larger bending radius, perhaps 5 inches or more, to be bent successfully without damage.
Pipe Material: Different pipe materials have different mechanical properties such as hardness, ductility, and elasticity, which affect the achievable bending radius. Softer materials like aluminum and copper are generally more ductile and can often be bent to smaller bending radii compared to harder materials like stainless steel or carbon steel. For instance, an aluminum pipe might be able to be bent to a bending radius of 0.75 inches, while a stainless steel pipe of the same diameter might require a bending radius of at least 1.5 inches to avoid excessive stress and potential damage.
The skill and technique of the operator also play a role in determining the achievable bending radius. An experienced operator who is familiar with the manual bending machine and the characteristics of the pipe being bent can often achieve a closer approximation to the desired bending radius. They can make adjustments during the bending process, such as applying the right amount of force at the right time and in the right direction, to ensure that the pipe bends smoothly around the die and achieves the intended bending radius. In contrast, a less experienced operator may struggle to achieve the exact bending radius due to improper handling of the machine and pipe.
