When crimping stainless steel pipes, there are indeed several special requirements for the material of the die set:

High Hardness


  • Stainless steel pipes are relatively hard materials. Therefore, the die set needs to be made of a material with sufficient hardness to withstand the high forces exerted during the crimping process without deforming or wearing out too quickly. Materials like hardened steel or tungsten carbide are often preferred due to their high hardness levels. Hardened steel can provide good durability and resistance to deformation, while tungsten carbide is even harder and can better handle the intense pressure and abrasion involved in crimping stainless steel pipes.

Good Wear Resistance


  • The continuous contact and friction between the die set and the stainless steel pipe during crimping can cause significant wear. To ensure a long service life and consistent crimping quality, the die set material should have excellent wear resistance. Materials with a fine microstructure and high hardness typically exhibit better wear resistance. For example, certain alloy steels with added elements to enhance wear resistance can be suitable choices. Tungsten carbide, again, is renowned for its outstanding wear resistance, making it a top candidate for die sets used in crimping stainless steel pipes.

High Strength


  • In addition to hardness and wear resistance, the die set material must possess high strength to endure the compressive forces generated when crimping stainless steel pipes. The forces can be substantial, and if the die set is not strong enough, it may crack or break under the pressure. High-strength alloy steels and tungsten carbide are both capable of withstanding these forces. Tungsten carbide has an extremely high compressive strength, which is advantageous when dealing with the demanding crimping of stainless steel pipes.

Corrosion Resistance


  • Although stainless steel pipes themselves are corrosion-resistant, during the crimping process, the die set may come into contact with various substances such as lubricants or residues from the manufacturing process. Some of these substances could potentially cause corrosion if the die set material is not resistant. Therefore, the die set material should preferably have some level of corrosion resistance. Stainless steel alloys with different compositions can be used, depending on the specific environment and requirements. Tungsten carbide is generally chemically inert and less likely to be affected by corrosion, which is another plus point for its use in die sets for crimping stainless steel pipes.
